The challenge with sunsets is the constant change of value, color, and chroma from one end of the painting to another.    First, lets look at value: The center of a sunset (you're right, the sun) is the lightest value of the entire painting.  Nothing can come close to this value!.  As we move away from the sun, your guessed it, the value decreases.  Fairly simple concepts.
