Step-by-Step Landscape 2
This painting was done several years ago just after the Landscape 1 in the previous blog entry.
1. Same techniques used with regard to the underpainting, hand painted with burnt sienna.

2. Added initial layers of color for the trees and grass with green and orange followed by a light blue/green for the foggy haze.

3. I like the technique of seeing the light through tree branches by painting the trees first (such as the one sticking up above the others on the left) and then painting the sky through it, as opposed to painting the sky and then adding the tree on top. There is something about painting light through a tree by painting the tree first followed by the light behind it that just seems to work best. You can see the technique used by lots of landscape painters.

4. The light spots through the shadows of the left side of the church are much lower in value and a stronger orange hue than the larger sections of light on the right side. Light passing through holes in tree foliage is scattered causing light that makes it through to be subdued. Also, making those small areas of light as bright as the large areas of light on the right side of the church just looks wrong.
